I've come to think of people as similar to trees.
If you cut down a tree, you see rings -- each year's growth goes around the existing tree. So, too, it is with people: The six year old me is still inside somewhere, and the 18 year old too.
Actually, the 18 year old breaks through to the surface far too often.
And the other bad part of the analogy is that, in my case, it's too exact: Each years growth seems to go around my existing middle!
