I'm Out of Here

No, I’m not leaving the blogosphere, but I am taking a little vacation back home to Iowa, so if you’ve ever wondered what the middle of nowhere looks like, you’re about to find out. Starting next week, I will be writing a series of posts called, “Notes from the Middle of Nowhere.” I’ll be visiting all the hot spots in and around Clarinda, Iowa. My mom said that there is a Sub-Way in town, and I can’t wait to visit the town’s old state mental hospital. And to top it all off, I'm going to be in Clarinda during the Glenn Miller Festival. I told you that this is going to be fun. Trust me. Do I hear snoring? Wake up! I’m telling you that this is going to be entertaining. I’ll have my camera with me, so you can see all of the famous Iowa landmarks, too. I hope the weather cooperates. It’s storm season in the Midwest, and I’m traveling to a part of Iowa that is nestled away in Tornado Alley.

I hope I don’t end up in Oz, but I'm packing my ruby slippers just in case.

Road Trip! Stay tuned, and enjoy your weekend.

Mother Jones

I am happy to hear and read about Iowa - in fact I would be happy to be able to read anything on blogger after my experiences over the past 24 hours... have a great break.
Oh by the way, I put your post from yesterday in my Soup du Jour.

Mother Jones comes from Clarinda? Wow. I grew up near Creston. My aunt had extended electroshock therapy in the Clarinda mental hospital. (Don't know if it did her any good, or if she just eventually got better on her own.)

At least one of your readers looks forward to a tour of southwestern Iowa. I haven't been back since my parents died. Take plenty of pictures!

Oooh, I can't wait to 'travel' with you. I will probably never make it to Iowa, so this will be the next best thing.

Have a safe and fun trip!

have a fun trip Mother Jones. I am looking forward to hearing and seeing all about it! Deep in the heartland! The festival sounds fun but then again I love anything with the word festival in it!

Hey, I was born in Villisca in 1944! My parents were "Central" there, the telephone operators (boy, I'm old). They were also "Central" in Guss (which was a Villisca address). I went to one-room schoolhouses. Interesting to see my birth area mentioned.

No, I don't work for the Iowa tourism bureau. Never been to the Tall Corn State, but that ain't all they grow there. Clarinda has Glenn Miller, Mason City has Meredith Willson who is said to have patterned "The Music Man" after his boyhood there, and Davenport claims Bix Beiderbecke, world famous traditional jazz musician. Best of all, Riverside, population under a thousand is the future birthplace, March 22, 2233, of starship Captain James. T Kirk. Kirk and company filmed a movie in Riverside, "Invasion Iowa," that will make you laugh your butt off if you can find a bootleg copy someplace. Sadly, it is was on Spike TV only but not released on DVD.It's one of the all time great put-ons. Get there if you can and ask some people if they still feel like victims of a bad joke.

I'm headed to Davenport (my home until I was almost 12) in August. Love the Mississippi Valley humidity that cranks up that time of year.

Safe travels to you.
