The Terrorist And The Gossiping Nurses
Norman Rockwell got it right in this picture. People love to gossip. Nurses love to gossip, too, even about the petty stuff, so I can just imagine what nurses at Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital in Glasgow, Scotland are saying after they learned about the shenanigans of one of their foreign born doctors. It seems as though one of their Iraqi doctors, who is now being treated for burns at the hospital, was the man who tried to blow up the Glasgow airport.
I wonder if the nurses are fighting over who is going to take him as a patient. I ordinarily hate floating to other units, but I’d make an exception in this case. I’d love to be this guy’s nurse. The Florence Nightingale Pledge be damned, I’d have such fun torching the douche bag. I can see it now:
“Good Morning Mr. Terrorist. I’m your nurse, Mother Jones, RN. My, those burns look painful. Were those the kind of burns that you were trying to inflict on other people? Time to debride those burns. Let me rip those bandages off for you.”
You get the picture. I’d be having way too much fun.
I wonder how all of this is going to affect the foreign born doctors at our hospital. The FBI came to our hospital right after 9/11, and wanted to know about the doctors who built a Mosque across the street from our facility. The doctors wanted a place to pray while they were at work. These guys aren’t terrorists, but now I wonder if this incident is going to bring the FBI back for another visit.
I look for the positive in every situation. Perhaps this situation will prompt some of our foreign born doctors to start treading a little more lightly around the nurses station, and stop acting like jerks.

MJ I can understand your anger as my reaction is the same. Regardless, you are a professional, and despite your darkest thoughts I doubt you would do any less than give this dirt bag the same treatment you would give any other patient. Then again those wounds would certainly need cleaning and someone would just have to do it!!!
Just remember when you have scum of the earth as your patient, document very carefully and in great detail. To cover the "ass-ets" is always a good thing. ^_^
I know you are venting and that you'd never be anything other than entirely professional in your actual treatment of such a patient. Your tone of voice... your demeanor... well, that's difficult to say, isn't it?
But about that mosque across the street:
Since 9/11 I've been reading a lot about Islam, and Islam in America, and mosque-building. It comes down to this: Who put money into that mosque? In Chicago there have been cases of congregations (wrong word, but I can't come up with the right one) hijacked by Saudi money. Cab drivers and grocers who are building new lives in America and want a place to practice their religion get together to build a mosque... and then the Wahhabis come in... and they want to contribute money to help... and Lord knows, they have a ton of it thanks to our continued dependence on Saudi oil... so they can build a big, grand complex... and then the Wahhabis want a couple of their people on the board of directors... and they want to send over an imam to staff the place... and run the youth program... and the next thing you know, the young people are wearing head scarves or growing beards -- when their parents never did -- and instead of American Muslims... a new, tolerant and potentially liberalizing school of thought within Islam... we have a new class of fundamentalists.
I'm nervous about the FBI investigating churches... and I know that politics and religion have to overlap somewhere... those tablets that Moses brought down from Mt. Sinai weren't just to follow on the Sabbath... but the more conservative schools of Islamic thought require 100% overlap... with religion always on top... and no room for anyone else to do things differently.
I want to be tolerant. It's un-American not to be tolerant. But I can't help but think it may be necessary to have law enforcement types sit in on Friday meetings at a lot of mosques. And I don't like thinking that way either.
Yes we would nurse this patient any way we would nurse another...we have all had patients that are seedy for lack of better word, and we treat them just the same....but oh my I can see where you momentarily would want too....I would just love the opportunity to hear why he thought it was ok to do that to another human being....god, jesus, mohammad, never preached ill harm to another...so why then do they....Curmudge...gone are the days of bingo's and bake sales and fundraisers to help build a church/temple/mosque for worship.
You know this is terrible but I think that if you are Muslim/Islam whatever then the powers that be are justified in "profiling" I mean really, how many Christians have blown something up lately? How about Buddists or Hindus? What about Jews? Well, they do blow up Palestinians from time to time. I say if you can't even trust the Muslim Drs. then who the hell can you trust? I admit it: I am paranoid around them all now! They are about as crazy as the dang Scientologists if you ask me! But then that's just my opinion! And yep, I would so love to be the nurse assisting with that Drs. whirlpool therapy.I just would want them to be squeaky clean!
"how many Christians have blown something up lately?"
Well, while I won't call them Christians, I'm sure that most of those people who bomb abortion clinics (http://www.religioustolerance.org/abo_viol.htm)
call themselves that.
It's time to look at some of our home grown terrorism and who it impacts if you ask me. But it's a lot easier to just blame it all on "foreigners."
Now what's it going to take to make the American-born doctors start treading lightly around the nurses' station and stop acting like jerks??
:)
The mosque across the street from our hospital was built many years ago by four local doctors with deep pockets. They built the mosque with their own funds. The FBI checked them out because they unknowingly gave money to charities that were linked to terrorist organizations. They were told that the funds were going to be used to feed hungry children in the Middle East.
This may sound like a stupid question, but do all doctors of all nationalities have to take the hippocratic oath? I just wonder. And even if these guys didn't take the oath, how do the reconcile killing people while claiming to be healers?
I don't think you asked a stupid question, sqt. I think doctors from around the world take the oath. I can't imagine how a healer can think about killing others. It doesn't make sense.
MJ
MJ,
I know how you feel.
We've all heard this saying before, "One bad apple corrupts the whole bunch". Because of the actions of a few individuals, the whole bunch is affected, and therefore can we blame people for stereotyping?
As for that individual, he got a taste of his own medicine. Good for him!
Good post Mother J.
I 'd also like to be the guy 's nurse. And to think of it one of the guys 's an Indian. His mom is a doctor too. I 'd treat him by sprinkling salt on his burns, like they say in India.
I love rockwell
