Tears on My Pillow

No, this post isn’t about a cheesy country western song. I just got home after working 16 hours at the hospital on crutches. My orthopedic doctor saw no reason why I couldn’t hobble up and down the halls on a sprained ankle, so he released me to go back to work. My foot and ankle are swollen and I’m in so much pain, I have tears rolling down my cheeks. I’m not going to tell you what I think about Dr. Fancy Pants, but I’m sure you can figure it out. I’ll be happy when this weekend is over.

Will someone please give me the winning Lotto Jackpot numbers?

  1. I completely hear you on the lotto. It would sure make my life a lot easier right now.

I am so sorry your ankle is hurting....man, 16 hours on a sprained ankle on crutches?? That is insane. I wonder about the safety of that, what if there had been an emergency, how would you have coped? My heart goes out to you today.

    Feel better, MJ.

16 hours on a sprained ankle and crutches? Whack Dr. Fancy Pants over the head with a crutch.

This is my recipe when I'm feeling terrible.
It's not the lottery, but I hope it will do.

  6. God BLESS, sister! What a mess! So sorry to hear about that still-ailing-ankle...and that ailing doctor (when YOU get through to him, anyway).

  7. Hey girl,
I can identify (well almost) with the crutches and swelling. My son broke his ankle a few weeks ago and has been on crutches since. Not only does his foot hurt I now have to tend to the rash in his armpits from said crutches.

Hope you feel better and get a chance to sit back and lift the leg for a while.

  8. OMG, your doctor wouldn't give you a work excuse with you on crutches and in pain? That would irk me no end. It would bug me because I would suspect that he was being judgmental, since most docs I know don't have a problem with writing out work excuses for people with mobility problems--especially a nurse who's job entails her to be on her dang feet all day.

If it's still giving you problems after this much time, you might want to get it re-x-rayed or try seeking another opinion. You could have an occult fracture.

At the very least, you should be on desk work only. It's unreasonable to work an active job on crutches.

I hope you find some relief.

  10. Yikes! Elevate it, ice it, and take good pain pills! I agree that you need another x-ray.
    The doctor is an idiot.

  13. I want to say something encouraging, but everything that comes to mind is profane and unsuitable for posting in a public place.

    You deserve better.

    The numbers are
    3, 14, 26, 34, 43, 49.

Only problem is -- I don't know when they will come up!

    Blessings,
    Dr. Ursa

  17. (Always looking to see if there might be another side to the question...)

Is it possible that Dr. Fancy Pants did not know you'd be working 16 hours?

    No?

Never mind then: String him up!

  21. So sorry about ur ankle!! Please be careful and rest that ankle. We love you alive, hale and hearty!!

  22. Use a Ginger Compress!!!! increased local cirulation, decreased swelling and pain.
Grate enough fresh, raw ginger to cover your ankle, wrap a plastic bag around that, then a hot/wet towel around the whole mess. Sit back till it is cold.

    You will feel better.
    Sorry you are hurtin.

  23. Honey quick call that dumb ass and get him to write you an rx for light duty so you can do paperwork or scheduling or something. Do not martyr yourself for that place because one thing I have found is that they can surely do without you even if they say they can't they can.

You're a good Christian woman. If that had been MY ankle sprained, regardless of whether or not orthopedic guy released me, I would have told Dr. Fancy Pants he will do without me until my ankle is COMPLETELY well. I don't have to remind you that you're just doing more damage to yourself. Who is going to look after you when you're 80 some years old and can't walk due to that ankle? Nurses never lack for a job, and it seems to me that you're due for one that's worthy of you(certainly NOT with Dr. Fancy Pants!!). OK, so go tell me to sit down now and get off the sermon box. :P

  26. Jeez, your story illustrates everything I think is wrong with nurses. You are too damn NICE. Born to be used. Giving till it hurts. And it does doesn't it? Just say NO, girl. Get a second opinion and start to build a case against the "Company Doc" who gets paid to send patients back to work...ready or not.
And people woinder why there is a nursing shortage when you are expected to put up with that nonsense. And oh I don't think it helps Doctors feel more respect for nurses either. They just feel that nurses are stupid to take that abuse.
Oh and I'm a nurse, but not anywhere that I can be used for target practice like that.
